01-07-1872 : Born
in Cambrai. |
|
1902
Bleriot I
Apparently a model as it spanned only 1.5 meters.
Powered by a CO2 engine of 2 hp.
Has never flown; was handed over to the Musee de l'Air in 1937 and has
since disappeared. |
|
1905
Louis Blériot meets Gabriël Voisin. The start of a promising cooperation. |
|
1905
Bleriot II
Glider on floats to be towed by a speedboat with an
Antoinette engine. Testflying over water was considered safer in those
days.
Biplane with boxkite tailsurfaces. Upper wing has greater span than lower
one.
The airframe was designed by Voisin but Bleriot attempted to influence him
in many ways, hence the strongly curved wing section.
Made only one start wich failed and has never managed to fly. |
|
1906 Participation in
the enterprise of Levavasseur, the S.A. Antoinette. |
|
1906
Bleriot III.
Powered airplane with elliptical tandemwings and equipped with floats.
Double elevators,positioned behind the propellors.
Propulsion: twin propellors, driven by a 20 hp Antoinette engine through a
reduction gearing. The engine was built on special order with a bore and
stroke of each 80 mm.
Weight drive train/gearing 110 kg. Total weight of airplane 400 kg.
May 1906: Tests conducted by Louis Peyret proved unsuccesful: it would not
leave the water. |
|
1906
Bleriot IV
Modification on Bl. III. Front wing replaced by a boxkite type wing.
Ailerons mounted on struts between the front wings.
Rear tandem wing equipped with a rudder. Double elevator mounted in front
of front wing.
Twin pusher propellors, each driven by a 24 hp Antoinette motor (8 cyl.)
through a gear reduction. Total weight 480 kg.
October: tested on floats, results nil. |
|
1906
Bleriot IV
12 november: Tested on land (Bois de
Boulogne): got severely damaged after it struck an obstacle.
An attempt was made to rebuild it with with a single 50 hp
Antoinette engine but it was never completed.
Thus ended the partnership with Voisin. |
|
1907
Start of a new enterprise: L.Bleriot Recherches Aéronautiques in
Neuilly, dedicated to the design and construction of aeroplanes. |
|
1907
Bleriot V
And now for something completely different!
Monoplane in canard configuration. Driven by a 24 hp Antoinette engine.
Weight (incl pilot) 236 kg.
21-03: primary test: considerable damage through collapsing
undercarriage. Subsequent tests with similar results. |
|
05-04-1907
The first leap has been made; a "flight" of 5 to 6 meters. |
|
19-04-1907
Because of a hard 'landing' the plane gets seriously damaged. |
|
juni
1907 Bleriot VI. the "Libellule"
Tandem layout. Strong dihedral on both wings.
Elevons mounted on front wing. Rudder between two vertical fins (top and
bottom).
Propulsion: conventional propellor with 24 hp Antoinette engine.
11-07: first flight of ± 30 meter, aborted because of pedestrians
crossing ahead. 25-07: flight of 10 sec. and ± 150 meters with
changes of direction.
Modifications: less dihedral in front wing and no dihedral in rear one.
16-cylinder Antoinette of 50 hp. 4-bladed metal propellor.
17-09: testflight with fixed elevator(!). When the engine failed a
nosedive followed suit leading to a crash landing.
Duration of this flight 17 secs, distance 184
meters. Longest European flight sofar. |
|
|
1907
Bleriot VII
Lowwinged monoplane. Covered fuselage, large stabilizer with elevator.
4-bladed prop, driven by a 16-cylinder 50 hp Antoinette.
Undercarriage suspension to prevent damage on landing.
Later modifications consisted of placing the wing higher and introducing a cabane for
bracing wires on the wing.
06-12: two flights of 500 meters.
U-turn executed.
18-12: undercarriage gave way on landing: airplane overturned and
was destroyed. |
|
|
1908
Bleriot VIII
Follow-up on Bl VII, in various layouts concerning placement of the ailerons.
After a crash the machine was rebuilt, which hitherto had never occurred.
The picture shows the VIIIb (bis), therefore presumably the rebuilt machine. |
|
1908
Bleriot VIIIt
The third version of the 'VIII'.
31-10: Bleriot used this machine to fly from Toury to Artenai and
back, admittedly with intermediate stops but with 28 km the longest overlandflight
ever. |
|
1909
Bleriot IX
Follow-up on the 'VIII'. Never passed the testing stage. |
|
1909
Bleriot X
A complete change of fashion with regard to all of its predecessors. This is
a Wright style biplane intended for four(!) persons.
Was put on display at the Salon de Paris but has never flown. |
|
1909
Bleriot XI
Start of the success story for Louis Bleriot.
Further development on Bl. VIII. Wingwarping for lateral control was
introduced here in favour of aileron control.
23-01: first flight on Issy-les-Moulineaux, still with the REP
engine.(Robert Esnault-Pelterie)
15-03: testflight of 2500 meter with REP engine |
|
1909
Bleriot XI
27-05: Introduction of the Anzani engine: 3377 cc, 3 cylinders,
bore
105, stroke 130 mm. The successes are flowing in:
26-06: Issy, 36 min 55 sec.
04-07: Juvisy, 50 min 8 sec.
13-07: Prix de Voyage, 41,2 km from Etampes to Orléans in 44 min 30 sec.
With these achievements the Channel crossing has become a real possibility. |
